the collège (lower secondary school) and lycée (upper secondary school).
At the end of elementary school, compulsory schooling must provide each student with a common core of knowledge and skills which it is essential to master in order to succeed in school and build a personal and professional future. This constitutes a set of values, knowledge, languages and practices. It involves mastering French, the principal mathematical tools, a scientific and humanist culture allowing the free exercise of citizenship, and also mastering a modern foreign language and communication techniques.
Sixième, or the adaptation cycle
The objective is to consolidate what has been learnt in the primary school and introduce the students to the study methods used in the collège. Particular attention is paid to the students’ integration and their adaptation to secondary education. They have the benefit of personalized support to help achieve this. (Help in Mathematics and in French + supervised study). In sixième, students choose a compulsory first modern foreign language (English) and may select an optional introduction to Malay.
Cinquième and Quatrième, or the central cycle
The objective is to enable students to deepen “their knowledge and know-how”. This cycle is characterized by the coherence of the teaching course over the two years and the progressive enrichment of the course by subject options. Particular attention is paid during the cycle to academic difficulties and to developing an orientation plan for the students in the context of careers’ guidance and training. In Cinquième, physics and chemistry teaching starts. The collégiens have the option of learning a classic language (Latin) or a modern language (Chinese and Malay). In Quatrième, the students choose a second compulsory modern foreign language (Spanish, German or Chinese). They can also continue an optional subject (Latin, Chinese or Malay). The LFKL continues to make personalized support a priority with help in Mathematics and French.
Troisième, or the orientation cycle
This sees the culmination of the learning acquisitions in the collège and prepares for general, technical and professional training. In Troisième, the students continue the modern languages studied in Quatrième. At the end of Troisième, the students sit for the National Brevet Examination and can choose an orientation towards a general Seconde class at the LFKL or a technical or professional course in France.
Tthis consists of three classes: the general and technical Seconde class common to students who will continue their studies in one of the general or technical courses. The choice between these two courses is made at the end of this class. The Première and Terminale classes in the different streams lead to the Baccalauréat examination. The Baccalauréat validates the knowledge and skills at the end of the first level of higher education. As such it enables the students to pursue higher studies. At the Lycée Français of Kuala Lumpur, the general course consists of three streams (ES (Economics and Social Science), L (Literature) and S (Science) which lead to the General Baccalauréat.
Seconde, or the determining cycle
The determining cycle corresponds to the general and technical Seconde class. It is the common class for those students who wish to follow the technical or general course. It is at the end of Seconde that the students choose one of these courses and one of the streams offered by them. The Seconde general and technical class is above all a determining class where the student tests his or her tastes and aptitudes before choosing a direction in Première. It is during the Seconde year that the LFKL students participate in professional work experience training.
Première and Terminale, or the terminal cycle
The terminal cycle corresponds to the Première and Terminale classes in one of the general course streams at the LFKL. It concludes with the Baccalauréat examinations, L, ES, or S. The Première class consists largely of studies common to all, while offering the first specializations in specific courses from each stream. In the Terminale class, the common studies are reduced in favour of more specialization, with a view to continuing higher studies.
The Baccalauréat streams at the LFKL In each of these streams, students at the LFKL are taught by the direct teaching method.
Stream L (the literary stream) The literary Baccalauréat involves analysis and synthesis skills, as well as requiring a keen interest in literature, languages, history and geography and the arts. Its objective is to deepen the students’ literary culture based on analyses, putting work into perspective and arguing, as well as acquiring critical thinking skills, nourished by the philosophy course.
Série S (the science stream) The scientific Baccalauréat involves an ability for the abstract, for rigour, reasoning and an interest in experimentation. Its objective is to develop a real scientific culture based on knowledge and an experimental scientific approach.
“Bac Economique et Social”:
Serie ES (Economics and Social Science stream) A multidisciplinary Baccalauréat, the Economic and Social Science stream pays particular attention to the socio-economic environment and to current events and calls for a strong interest in history, geography and mathematics. Its objective is to deepen the students’ economic culture through synthetic thinking and curiosity.
